Annihilation (part 2)
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
What happens when the laws of biology start to bend and the world you knew becomes a fractal nightmare? This week, we step into the Shimmer to dissect Alex Garland’s take on Annihilation. Why does everyone keep calling it a tunnel when it’s clearly a tower? We explore the disturbing beauty of the biological refraction and why some characters just seem to disappear into the flowers.
Hear Joe lose his mind over a sudden Southern accent on a lighthouse videotape! Hear Jen scream about the impossible physics of a mutant bear that mimics its victims' final moments! Hear Tom nerd out over why the book’s fungal writing is far more terrifying than anything we saw on screen!
We’re diving deep into the hole to figure out if that explosive ending was a masterstroke or a total logic-free cop-out. We talk character motivations, body horror, and that infamous stomach window. All that, plus the definitive answer to whether the dolphin was actually her husband!

Last time on shelf to screen.
JoeI'm kind of curious as to what that would have been like, monster.
TomYeah, and make her more traditional hero and make the ending less ambiguous.
JoeHe wanted them to make her more likable. I don't find her really unlikable in the movie.
JenYou wanna hear one of my notes? Hey, you know who I hate? Lena.
JoeClearly been talking more about the book than the movie, but I think it's more fun to talk about the book, but that's okay. Well, we got a lot of movies still to talk about.
TomTrue.
JoeThere's not really a lot of movie to talk about in like the first, I don't know, hour or so.
JenYeah.
JoeI don't know.
JenShe also doesn't finish painting. She left her whole house like like her bedroom like half painted.
JoeThat's right.
JenShe should ever go back.
JoeAnd when she goes back there after the end of the at the end of the movie, she's gonna be really upset that she never finished painting.
JenAre they gonna let her out? Or is she trapped forever?
JoeI have no idea. We could well let we should definitely talk about at the ending of the movie, because I have questions about that as well.
JenOkay. Me too.
JoeUh yeah. Annihilation. I don't know why they didn't make the the sequels in two movies.
JenHow do you make a sequel about her looking for her husband when her husband died?
TomMy understanding of the I don't know anything, but my understanding of the side of the side of the side.
JoeI don't know how you make a sequel.
TomIt's not it hasn't it doesn't take place in Area X. It takes it's like about the reach the organization.
JoeI also don't think you can make an adaptation of sequels to a book that you really didn't follow very much.
TomYeah.
JoeUm yeah. So so so strange. Alright. Ready to start? This is Shelf to Screen, the podcast where we discuss sci-fi and fantasy, literary adaptations to the big and or small screen. I'm Jeff Vanderjoe.
JenI'm Anya Thoringen. That was the name I was gonna pick, god damn it.
JoeWhat was your name gonna be, Tom? Go ahead.
TomAnya Tominson.
JenThere you go. I think it's okay.
TomIt's not okay.
JoeI like I like how the Puerto Rican actress has a very Nordic name Anya Thornson. Why didn't they just change? I don't know. It's so weird. So weird. My dad's Swedish.
TomRight, right.
JenYeah. Okay.
JoeUh we are continuing our uh exploration of Area X. Um the mutation of the mutated adaptation of the book Annihilation into the movie uh made by Alex Garland. We've been all over the place. We're never linear. I guess just kind of like the story is not necessarily linear.
TomYou I think we're gonna start talking about uh some of the other characters other than Lena and and Kane.
JoeLena and Kane. Well, yeah, we have uh it's got a pretty good cast this movie. We got Jennifer Jason Lee, you know, as Dr. Ventress, who um yeah, she's kind of boring, I think, actually.
JenAnother off another awful character.
JoeYes, just the worst. Her her character's kind of boring, I feel. Um Jenna, if you don't like her in the movie, you would hate her in the book. She's much worse, I feel like it in the book.
TomWow. Jesus, but she's a villain in the book.
JoeLike it's yeah, basically. She gets one of them killed and lies about it. She's hypnotizing them and making them do things. Right. She's a pretty bad person. And she knows a lot of other information about Area X that she doesn't tell anybody about until she's dying, and uh uh Le Lean uh the biologist makes her tell, or just asks her, really, but yeah.
TomShe also does try to get the biologist to kill themselves rather than give up any information. But it doesn't work.
JoeNo, no, no, no, no, no. Uh yeah, and then we've got our uh our physicist. Is Joe is Josie the physicist, Tessa Thompson's character?
TomYeah, yeah. She's the physicist who's got she's the one who comes up with like the like the fractal prism theory. The prism of the DNA, yeah.
JoeWhere it's just the the shimmer is just ref refracting life, light, sound, biological waves. I don't know. It's just refer it's refracting uh or organisms. I don't know. And then we've got Gina Rodriguez's character, the aforementioned Anya Thorensen, who's the paramedic. She uh she loses her shit when she finds out that um Lena right Lena doesn't say anything that her husband was in the previous expedition. She doesn't tell anybody. The only person who knows is Dr. Uh Dr. Jason Lee. Um and uh they the videotape that they find. I don't know. Do you want to talk about this scene?
JenWhat the worm in the guy's stomach?
JoeThe hey, let's cut my buddy open and show you something cool.
JenI mean, he was gonna die anyway, I guess. So they just cut like a window into his stomach and just like opened it up. Like, is that how that works?
JoeApparently. And I I guess they knew it was gonna be there.
JenBut he died. I mean, he was gonna die anyway. I would imagine.
JoeHow did they know that that was gonna be there, though? I guess is my question.
TomI imagine it happened to somebody else for yeah, or yeah, who knows? They're already clearly crazy, like they're not crazy.
JoeThis shit's happened.
JenCalm down, calm down.
TomI mean, they're crazy in the fact that this is like this is a thing that you would do.
JoeOh, yeah, yeah. Yeah. They could have waited until he died and then cut his stomach open and so people.
JenYeah.
JoeYeah. This is a really that's a really fucked up scene. And then you and then later on when they when they're there, right? They're while they're in that place where that happened, um, you see the the guy like kind of just sprawled out in like spread out, yeah. Spread out in some sort of like uh, I don't know, flowery plant like installation. Installation.
JenNo, it like grew out of his body and then like cracked, you know, but brought his upper his torso was like up here and yeah. It's some there was some gory visuals in this movie, definitely.
JoeYeah. Oh yeah, oh yeah, some interesting it was beautiful and and gory at the same time, I think. Uh definitely disturbing. Yeah. When I was watching this, it made me think of The Last of Us, and I feel like maybe they pulled a little bit of like the the visual aspect of the uh what's it called? The mushroom people.
JenI forget what they're called, but when did the Last of Us video game come out?
JoeOh, that's a good question. Before or after this book.
JenLet's see.
JoeProbably after, but I don't know for sure.
JenUm 20 thir 2013.
JoeOh, the same time he was writing this book.
JenIt came out in the movie came out in 2018.
JoeYeah, so maybe okay, so then maybe the uh the the video game borrow uh the movie borrowed some visual inspiration from the video game, potentially. So that's when we uh and that's when sorry, I'm getting back to that, right? So that's when Gina Rodriguez figures out that this guy on the video was Lena's husband because she what did she steal her her locket and saw the picture of him in there? I think so she ties all of them up. Well, I forgot what's her name gets taken away by the bear first, sorry.
JenCa Cassie?
JoeIs that a Cassie Shepherd?
JenYeah. The bear just tears her throat out, kind of.
JoeYeah, the mutant bear pulls takes her away. Um Yeah. Yeah. So Gene Rodriguez loses her shit, she ties them all to the chair, and she's gonna she's gonna cut open Lena's belly. But we don't get to see that.
JenAnd the the bear with the fake voice comes.
JoeIs it a fake voice, Jen?
JenUm Oh well, in the movie it the DNA of her voice like merged with the bear or something.
TomThat good old voice DNA.
JenI don't know. I don't know. I thought the bear. I thought that I thought that the bear was just like able to mimic when it when it first happened, and then they were like, oh, as she died, like the imprint of her scream. That reminds me of something else, too. Like a like a traumatic. I don't know. I don't know what it is, but yeah, that was weird. It was weird. I don't know.
JoeI I thought it was more like when he ate her, he ate her voice and gained gained her voice like as a palette.
JenYeah, I thought it was just like a like a like a parrot almost could like mimic the sound that it heard.
JoeI don't think so. I think it was more of like he ate her and has her DNA in him now, so now he gains some sort of actual reason.
JenBut isn't something in the hunger games like this with the it's not the mocking Jay, but something where Oh maybe I'm thinking of like the bit the the dogs in the book that are like the kids. I don't know. Not to ruin the hunger games, we get to that one, but I don't I don't I don't know. Something it's reminding me of something.
TomHe just records it and then replays it. Oh, that's right, yeah. It replays left or over and over again.
JenI I don't even know if Anya was going cra Like I I think she probably was going a little crazy, and that's why she tied everybody up. But like she already didn't believe Lena. She already didn't trust her, which like okay, you caught her in like a pretty big o omission of the truth. So you're not wrong. But then like she hears the girl's voice, and I don't think she was like stupid to go check and make sure that she really was dead. No, I don't think so. Since Lena wouldn't let anybody else go with her to see if she was dead or not for some random reason.
JoeWell, for this reason, Jen, it wouldn't make sense then for this scene.
JenYeah, but it's dumb. And then like she I don't think she was like off for wanting to go check and make sure.
JoeNo, no, I don't I don't think so either. I think maybe she was a little off for tying them up and getting ready to cut her belly open.
JenYeah.
JoeBut yeah.
TomDo you think Anya was in her belly? Yes, you mean? Was this Goldilocks?
JenNo, not Goldilocks. The little Red Riding Hood. Oh, it's little Red Riding Hood, yeah. They cut the wolf's belly open and she does her and my grandma just like pop out.
JoeYeah. That's how it works. Usually. We do get some book lean. I I do get some like, you know, feelings of book Lena, though, when I think it's the scene when um I think it's actually before this, right? This is when when Ventress wants to continue, she says, I'm going, I'm gonna continue on. Gina Rodriguez wants to go back. She's like, you know, one of our members, you know, party members died. We should go back. And then Lena kind of convinces her to stay, like in a somewhat sociopathic type of way. And I was like, ooh, I feel like this is book Lena for sure, or the book biologist. Um, you know, with her twisted logic about going to the shore, like if the shore is if the edge we can get out of the border on the shore, we can go out that way. It's much quicker.
JenYeah, I don't even know like how can they just like walk back out? They don't even know if they could do that.
JoeWe don't even know. We don't know.
JenYeah. I kind of feel like you're already you don't know for sure that you could like go back. I feel like, you know, so like you might as well just keep going and see what's going on in here.
JoeYeah. I mean, there's they re refer to extraction a little a bunch of times in the book. Like they have to go someplace for extraction. They don't ever mention like that they're gonna walk across the border, but you know that they have to go to the border for extraction.
JenWell, in the book, it's possible to get out. Like in this, it's impossible. No, I mean, except for her husband, who is who isn't really a human being who got out.
JoeUm Well, it's implied that the other characters in that or the other people in that expedition who got out were also clones because they all died like they all got cancer and died. Oh, correct.
JenSo everybody was a clone.
TomYeah.
JoeYeah.
JenSo no, you so you can't get out. Well, they're not whatever. It's it's a little more ambiguous, it seems like, in the book, whether you could just like get out or not.
JoeWell, I I would my theory, I guess, would be that they right, they do these clones, and the clones aren't able to survive in the environment outside area X because of the different, I guess, physics or laws of physics and biology.
JenSo I I have a question regarding that. Why does her husband, quotation marks, get better after Area X is destroyed?
JoeI don't, I don't, because that's how movies happen. That's how the story is supposed to happen. She she just she destroyed Area X with uh with a phosphorus grenade. And and then it's it it made her husband better.
JenYeah, like, but like so.
TomBut it's also inside her even though she's the one who isn't the clone.
JenYeah, like he can't survive outside area X, but then Area X gets destroyed, but now he's fine.
JoeWell, no, in the book he can't, I'm saying I think they can't survive outside area X. That's why they get it.
JenIt doesn't look like he's doing really good. He's on a ventilator. I mean, he was basically almost dead in the m in the movie.
JoeYeah.
JenThen once like Area X is destroyed, he's like fine. He popped right out. It doesn't make any sense. Like how what what's the yeah?
JoeArea X was making him sick. They had to it's like uh it's like a vampire, right? You have to kill the master vampire, the head vampire. And then uh all the other vampires become human again.
JenIs that what happens? Yeah.
JoeWait, it's what it's what happens in Lost Boys.
TomOh, it's what happens in Lost Boys, it's true.
JenDo we have more I I want to get into like when she goes into the hole.
JoeOh. You want to talk about the hole, Jen?
JenShe goes in the hole.
JoeTalk about the hole.
JenI was like watching, I'm like, I'm I I actually was thinking, like, would I ever go down that hole? And then I was like, I'm gonna die anyway. Like, I know I'm gonna die here. So I might as well just go down this hole and see what's going on.
JoeBefore before we go to the hole. I'm sorry. There's just one other thing. We we we have to talk about the um It's a drop. Well, there's another one, right? Can we talk about Anvere's hole? I seem to like want to stop and like interrupt us so we could talk about well, I want to talk about something other than the hole. Um, two things. Okay. One, uh Josie just like just like walks off and disappears. And what happens to her?
JenI thought she was gonna turn into like a plant person. I'm pretty sure.
JoeAnd then she was just gone. She was just, it was like, it was written, uh, all right, we're done with this character.
JenFirst of all, I thought she was gonna kill herself. Like I thought she was gonna hang herself or something, like really quick, like just snap her own neck. That did happen. And then her body was just gone. Like, what?
JoeNo.
JenShe's just the the She just like her DNA decided it was gonna refract away. Like, just she gave up and her DNA.
JoeDid she turn into one of those those like uh plant people?
JenYeah, the plant people. I don't know. I maybe she was just like uh she like Avengers endgame out Avengers uh infinity ward out.
JoeI'm telling you, what happened was we're done with this character. See ya.
JenYou can't just make a person disappear.
JoeIt's just like um in what's it called in in in Beerfest where they bring where they bring back uh Lanfill's brother. And you can just call me Landfill, so I feel like you're still here.
JenI'm thinking of Revenge of the Sith, which is like for reasons we can't explain, we're losing her.
JoeOh, yes, yes.
JenShe's just gone, okay. Yeah, she's dead. She's just lost the will to live.
JoeOkay.
JenYes.
JoeFor reasons we can't explain, Josie is gone.
JenJosie's gone. Um that page fell out of the screenplay.
JoeYeah. Like Oh shit, we forgot to write an ending for this character. Ah, just have her walk off and that's it. We don't see her again.
JenDisappears.
JoeShe gives it uh she gives into the shimmer. Um yeah, sorry, Jen. I was like, we have to talk about that.
JenNo, I did want to talk about that.
JoeThere was one other thing. Do I have I'm trying to see if I have a note about this. Um, the so the lighthouse. Go ahead.
JenI have something else. I have something else.
JoeYeah.
JenWhen they go into the house, like where the bear comes in and everything, why is it it's like her house.
TomYeah.
JenBut that's never mentioned in the movie at all. She walks in and it's the same staircase with the same like photo on the wall, and they kind of like freak like stop on it. Well, it's like one photo instead of like a bunch of photos. But it's the same.
TomIt's the same. It's per I I I my understanding is that this was a purpose, purposeful choice.
JoeOh, I'm sure it was. I didn't notice that.
TomAnd I would say this like there was some time when I was reading the book, there were certain points in the book where I was wondering whether where I was literally wondering whether any of the other characters, any of the other characters are real.
JenYeah, so was it all like in her mind? Yeah.
JoeOr if any of this was really even happening. Right. Like nothing's happening. Yeah. None of it's real. You get oh, you definitely get those vibes reading the book. Like, you're gonna like, am I gonna find out like none of this is really happening? I was like, I hope that's not the case. Or like you said, Tom, like these people aren't really here, or you know, like there's some sort of like M night shyan twist at the end. And I was glad there wasn't.
TomThere wasn't, yeah.
JoeUm, because I thought that would have been a cop out of some sort. I hate when they do that, it's like, oh, it's all taking place in her mind.
JenUh yeah, like I I don't know. But I was like, why would they what's the purpose of it being her house and never mentioning it or saying anything about it? Just that one location. I mean, I don't know if the rest of it was either, I don't remember, but I know that staircase. Because he you see like him going up the stairs, right? Is that what or see her. See you see somebody that on that staircase, and it's exactly the same. Very weird.
JoeI will say this Gina Rodriguez gets her face ripped off and it looks pretty awesome.
JenHer jaw. Yeah, that is pretty cool.
JoeIt was a pretty cool scene. Yeah, I I didn't catch that. Nice, thank you. I'll have to go back and check that out. Actually, no, I'm not gonna go back and watch this movie again.
JenWhy is the bear like a T-Rex where if you don't move it won't attack you?
JoeI I don't know, Jen.
JenOkay. I'm like, all right, they're all just gonna sit there as a bear. Like it's not gonna it sees you. I don't know why. Like, if you guys don't if you guys aren't scared of me, I won't do anything. Like, what?
JoeIt's a freaking bear. It's an old biologist trick.
JenYeah, I don't she's like, don't don't react to it. Like it's like the bear's like looking for a reaction, like it's a little kid. We just ignore it, it'll stop. Like what?
JoeI feel like there's a lot of stuff in here in this movie that just to serve the movie or the viewers, like like we want to put a scene in where you see this creepy bear close up in their faces. So we're gonna we're gonna you know back this into the movie. That's what I feel like. There's a lot of stuff like that in this movie.
JenI was like, well, Josie's dead because she's like super scared. I thought she was gonna die there, but then nope, she just walked away into the wilderness.
JoeThe flowers. To the garden of plant people. Um now we get to the lighthouse, Jadon. And outside the lighthouse, there's some weird skull bone setups. Are those supposed to is that what you're talking about, Tom? Like those are the clone people? Are those people from other expeditions, you think? Well, I was talking in the Kane put those bodies there, those those bones there?
TomYeah, or somebody did. Like uh so in the again, whatever. In the book, there's a lot, there's been a lot of bloodshed at the lighthouse over the different expeditions. Yeah. So is it even possible that those are older than Kane's expedition?
JoeMm-hmm. That would make more sense since they're kind of bleached bones. Yeah.
JenDoes it bother anybody else that she puts her bag down like on the surf and just like leaves it for dramatic effect? Like, you don't think you're gonna need anything in there? What are you doing? Well, also what happens when the bag with you.
JoeWhat happens if the tide comes in?
JenRight. It's gonna. It's not like she's leaving it and coming back for it. She's just like, I'm very dramatically gonna put this down and walk away. Why? Because you're like giving up, you're gonna die? Like, just take the bag with you. You don't know what's gonna happen.
JoeI bet you they did a shot like that, and Garland did not like it. He's like, No, I can't, I can't see Natalie's beautiful uh figure. I don't know. Making him have an accent he's from Florida or where he's from Garland.
JenUm I don't know.
JoeVanderbilt's from Florida.
JenShe walked for a she walked for a long time after she put it down. It wasn't like she was outside the lighthouse and she put it down. I don't know.
JoeYeah. Very interesting. Very yeah. I I Jen, that's that was distracting me. That's all I thought about in that scene. Like I did. Oh, he's English. Okay, there you go. Yeah.
TomI did the accent, Joe.
JoeHe's like, we can't cover Natalie Portman's beautiful figure here. Take the backpack off. How's that?
TomUncanny.
JoeYou don't even know what Alex Garland sounds like.
JenYou were Michael Caine. You were trying to be Michael Cain. You could put down the backpack.
JoePut down the backpack.
JenSo we can see your figure.
JoeYour figure. Let's see that bony spine of yours.
JenI'm telling you, it wasn't just like, ew, her back looks weird. There was something to it.
JoeYeah.
TomUm She's already an alien.
JenYeah, right. Like she's some kind of future.
JoeWe yeah, we didn't talk about this, but she does take a blood sample and look at it under the microscope and she notices like the same shimmery cell um mitosis happening that that she sees in the other n natural wildlife from the area.
JenSo after she was there.
JoeNo, I know.
JenOh, it's not like she had it before she got there.
JoeOh no, no, no. Yeah, no.
JenYeah, okay.
JoeYeah. Uh anyway, sorry. The lighthouse.
JenOkay. The lighthouse.
JoeThe hole, Jen. You want to go to the hole?
JenWell, before we get to the hole, right before the hole, we see the vide the video of her husband, right? Or is that after the hole? It's before the hole.
JoeWell, she sees the hole, but she doesn't go into it till that.
JenOkay, yeah, right. Um, did he have a southern accent for the whole movie? That's just what you were gonna say before you mentioned it.
JoeUnless her Isaac's character suddenly has a southern accent in the videotape recording at the lighthouse. That is my note.
JenI don't know. I was like, I didn't he talks a lot. I didn't pick up on that at all for the unless the unless that's something. Like maybe, I don't know. Maybe like crazy. Maybe they're both clones. Like, maybe neither one of them is him.
JoeMaybe that's the maybe that's the tell that that's the clone, the one.
JenI don't know why it would have a southern accent, but yeah. No, they're both clones.
JoeOh, they're both clones. It's a copy of a copy. It's like that movie multiplicity when you make the copy of the copy.
JenRight, and then the copy of the copy was like a little dumber. Yeah, no offense to people with southern accents, but it's a way to do that.
JoeNo, I'm not saying it's dumb. I'm saying it's less and less like the original.
JenOh, okay, okay.
JoeThere's changes that happen. We just lost all our southern uh our southern reach.
TomOh it's all connected, like New York telephone, baby.
JoeOh yeah.
JenYeah, I don't I don't know. That was so weird.
JoeYeah, and I want to say this like in the book, it's never clearly said that they're clones, like there's or or doppelgangers. But it's like it's implied, I think. And I I you know, there's a couple of mentions uh from the biologist about something like that happening, or that's even a theory of what she's you know, of hers. Um so I don't know if Garland was like, oh, there's doppelgangers, let's put that more heavily up front in the movie. Um, which is fine. I thought I thought that that was one aspect that I said that I think I liked about it, that they kind of leaned into that part a bit more. Um, but yeah, the hole. Then she hears something coming from the hole.
JenGoes into the hole.
JoeSo Jen, you were saying that if you were there You would go into the hole.
JenYou were thinking there's I was thinking if it was me, at first I said there's absolutely no way I would ever go down into this hole. But then I thought I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die here, probably. Like I don't think there's any chance of me not dying, so I might as well just go into the hole and see what happens.
JoeNow I could have I could have missed this, but when does the psychologist go off on her own? Because she's gonna go off on her own, and then they write, uh Lena convinces um what's her face, you know, the the Gina Rodriguez, and to go with them. So then she winds up going with them, but then all of a sudden she's not there, and I'm like, did I miss her leave?
JenAfter the bear comes, yeah, she leaves. And then it's Josie and Natalie Portman together. They don't know. Josie disappears. Well, they're just talking. They're just trying to decide if they're gonna go or not. And Josie's like, I don't whatever. She gives up on life, disappears, and then Natalie Portman continues alone towards the lighthouse.
JoeOkay.
JenSo I mean she meet basically meets her there.
JoeYeah, so you're in that you're you're outside that hole. You hear voices. You know the psychologist went there, so it's sounds vaguely like a female voice that it's probably her, so you probably go in that hole.
JenI'd go in the hole. And then I don't really know what happens after that. She's like, there it's inside me. But it's inside all of I don't know. She's just feeling feeling it more, and then she ch and then light comes out of her mouth and creates a floating creature.
JoeYeah, she says annihilation. We get the movie title boom right there in that little speech. She spits out light, accompanied by what sounds like it's gonna be some weird EDM music, but it never works.
JenWell, it's funny you should mention that because I was like, what is this music? And I voice recorded it. So let me see if you guys could hear what I I was like, I gotta sing the music because I'm gonna forget how it goes.
JoeOh, okay.
JenAll right, so let's say if it if we can hear it. Did you hear it? Yes.
JoeSo every song was like, I'm like, what is going on? I was really ready for some really intense EDM to kick in. Um nothing happens. It was like gonna kick in. It was like always, it was always like it was like just the tip, like we're gonna go, but no, we're not gonna do it. Little little tantric EDM there. Um yeah. Yeah, but she's just yeah, spits out light. We get flashes, we get some cool 2001 of space odyssey type effects. I told you we were gonna get it in this. Uh close-up of her eyes while the light thing's going on, the crazy light show going on. Um, and then we start getting, and then we get the I don't want to say alien, but I'll say alien for lack of a better phrase because it it's not necessarily like an alien from outer space, but alien in the sense of uh not of this place.
JenWell, it is an alien from outer space in the movie. Is it though? Because we see a meteor meteor from outer space hitting the lighthouse.
JoeDid I miss that again? Did I miss it? It's right at the beginning.
JenDon't blink, Joe. Oh. This is like a war of the world situation where it's coming up from under the I don't like that.
JoeI totally wasn't I totally wasn't paying attention to that. Maybe I thought that was still part of the uh the studio introduction because I was trying to I kept trying to figure out if the movie was starting or this was like the animation for the studio.
JenMeteoroid pictures. I might have thought Area X Pictures.
JoeSpece Rock Entertainment Shimmer Pictures presents Annihilation. Um okay, it was alien. All right, well, that ruins it. See, there's things that get ruined in this, like the fact that it's they they're implying it's an alien, or apparently flat out saying it's an alien. The prism theory, right? That's like, oh, I know what it is. They're just reflact, refracting or reflecting or bending, you know, things. Um I was like, no, I don't want any of these explanations. But just leave it a total mystery.
JenYou know, I love a good movie that ends with no answers.
JoeWell, this movie does never walk into the model.
JenIt does, it does have answers.
TomThis movie does have answers, right? It does. It does, but the answers don't make a goddamn lick of sense.
JenNo, but there's but they don't just like leave it hanging for you.
JoeJen, it doesn't have answers. It has a resolution, but it doesn't answer any questions.
JenLike, why does this alien why is it becoming her doppelganger? Who knows? What is it doing when it's like pinning her up against the door?
JoeBut why? This is like the process. I'm assuming all of the people who were ever cloned, like this is the same process her husband went through. Yeah.
TomRight.
JoeBut this is the creature like assimilating and becoming like learning how to be and turn into her. So it's been attack me.
JenIt just it just, you know, was mo mirroring me. But yes, it did, because it crushed you against the door and it wouldn't let you leave. That's an attack.
JoeYeah, but I think she means it wasn't trying to hurt her or kill her. It was it was more of a like, I'm trying to learn you.
JenRight. So I think if she had stayed there longer and let it continue, they could have been best friends.
JoeNo, I think she probably would have been killed by it and it would have left the area X and took pretended to be her.
JenWell, I mean, or she would have gone crazy and killed herself, like the way her husband did.
JoeYes.
JenBecause he the his clone didn't kill him. He was like happily recording a video for him. They were besties.
JoeYeah, you're I don't know if they were besties. I feel like maybe the clone might have been a little bit uh behind Kane killing himself.
JenI don't know. We'll never know.
JoeI mean, what would you do if if you let's all right, what would you do if you experienced what Lena experienced, and then it got to the point where there was a full clone of you there with you in that place, and it starts like it's talking to you and kind of telling you to do things, and you you know.
TomI'd have sex with it.
JenIf you were Natalie Portman, maybe you would.
JoeYou're a clone, Tom or Jen's clone. No, sorry. Um Your own clone. Who was that? That's from a movie, isn't it? Somebody says what they do with it.
TomI don't know. I am sure I'm sure I'm sure I've been the first person to clone with that channel.
JoeI'm pretty sure there's another movie where somebody says that, like a clone, they would have sex if they if they had a clone or encounter the clone with themselves, they'd have sex with them.
TomI'm just saying I'm a handsome guy. That's all I'm saying.
JenYeah, I don't I why can't they just like go? I don't know, why can't you talk to them and be like, what's going on here? Like, what do you want?
JoeOh, I think I know what it is. I think it's a joke, right? You're like, I'd have sex with myself, and then then the person says, uh, so I know what all the talk was about, or something like that, what all the women were talking about, or something stupid like that.
JenI don't know. She can't re reason with her clone.
TomShe reasons it to blow up. I don't know.
JenShe tricks it as well. I don't think she wants to find out. She holds its hands so gently and then books it the hell out of there. Yeah. She doesn't want to find out. Upset and burning. I don't know. I don't get it. And then the whole area. It sets him on fire, which okay, he did burn. But then like it's like she didn't she didn't burn. The clone didn't didn't explode like the way he did. So it's like a different it's not a human body. It's whatever whatever material it is wasn't really burning. So she was like holding the fire.
JoeI don't know.
JenAnd then just like passing it, like, did the I don't know. Yeah, I don't know.
JoeThe lighthouse burns, the whole place burns. She she saves the world from Area X by with a grenade, and her husband gets better.
TomLike, Lily, I saw the end of the movie, and I remember this from the first time I watched it. I'm like, it's like the end of the thriller video.
JenI just said that before when he looks at the camera, it's like thriller. Yeah, like it's very clear. This is not it's not him. Like it couldn't be more clear.
JoeI thought it was the reverse. I thought it's clearly not her, because don't you see her eyes turn different colors?
TomHis do first, and then hers do first.
JoeI thought, I thought his eyes don't turn colors because I was like, I didn't go back to watch this, and I'm I'm probably just gonna pull it up on Prime Video right now, anyway, just to make sure. Because I feel like I was looking for something in his eye and I didn't notice anything, but then when it cut to her, he's evil in his eyes. But her eyes color, her eyes like change colors.
JenSo you think she's a clone?
TomShe is a clone at the end. It makes no sense. Or she's not a clone, but she just has the prism effect inside of her.
JoeRight. Her DNA's changed because remember, she tests her blood. So I think she's she's not totally human anymore. I don't think she's a clone.
JenOkay, but she's still herself.
JoeYeah.
JenSo maybe that's why she doesn't really care that he's not himself because she's not herself anymore.
TomYeah, but I I I get a like they think they've won kind of vibe from the end of the movie.
JoeMy Blight of Fool is saying their their irises shimmers that both their eyes.
TomYes. Yeah.
JoeUm I don't know.
TomMy point being, if if she destroys Area X and that brings him back to life, then whatever's done to her should also not be done anymore. She shouldn't have the shimmer inside of her.
JenNo, but it doesn't bring him He's dying.
TomAnd then he's better.
JenIt should be the opposite. He should fully die.
TomYes. When she's nothing bigger than that.
JenWell, maybe that's because this isn't what happens in the book, and the guy just made the shit up.
TomYeah.
JenAnd didn't care. And then they wouldn't nobody and then showed it to an audience, and the audience was like, huh? And then they refused to change it and make it make sense.
TomRight.
JenAnd just were like, no, I believe in this guy who just kind of vaguely remembers a book he read once.
TomIt was pretty goddamn cool, damn it. I like the beach.
JoeYeah, yeah. Uh let's see here. Let's hide this. Let's go back. I'm gonna go back right to this scene here. Wait while I watch this. Sorry, everybody.
JenOkay.
JoeI'm almost there. Oh, here we go. Okay. They're hugging. It scans over and it's a little dark because I guess the the window is uh tinted screen.
JenYeah, what is that? Oh, okay. Yeah, that was that was on purpose.
JoeOh no, his eyes do shimmer. Hers you just notice it more because her uh her corneas are bigger. Both of their eyes shimmer. Yeah. That's why Tom's loves her so much. He loves her for her corneas. Yeah.
TomI I mean I I don't know.
JoeMaybe. Well, I guess it makes sense. They're both infected with the you know, whatever, the the aliens.
JenHe's a full clone. He's not infected. He came from the aliens.
JoeWho says a clone isn't though the per the real person though?
JenI say in this movie He's not the right same person. One drop of blood went into like a like a liquid metal human approximated creature and they copied the person. The blood like mutated and created a new person. I guess, yeah, I don't know.
JoeNever touch the blood. Yes. Never touch the blood. Yeah. And that's how this movie ends. Not how the book ends.
JenSo the book ends with her going to see if she can find him, but what happens in like the tunnels or whatever?
JoeLike what so there's a a tower or a tunnel, right? There's a whole thing like where everyone else calls it a tunnel, but she calls it a tower, and it really annoys her that they call it tunnel. Uh a tunnel.
TomSo it's underground, except for like six inches.
JoeYeah, it's literally like a tower that's buried in the ground. That's that's how she describes it.
TomOkay.
JoeAnd um, so they explore a lot of it, a lot of the book takes place uh in and around this tower, and it's like a big mystery, and they go in to explore it a few different times.
TomUm and like there's writing on the walls that's like like bioluminescence, bioluminescent writing on the walls, right? Like I guess some kind of fungus or whatever, or lichen or is like glowing, and it's words, and it's worth it's words in English that almost kind of make sense, but not really. They sound vaguely apocalyptic, but it's all like it's it's not it doesn't make sense, it just almost makes sense.
JenSo it's like AI wrote it.
JoeKinda photo of the phone. It's like a creepy mutated crawler or lighthouse keeper wrote it.
TomRight. And like that's the thing that like she's looking at it and she breathes it in and starts messing with her. Um but like she's obsessed about trying to figure out what the words mean, who wrote the words, is there a message, is that like a clue to what's going on here? And everything, the reason they're there, they've like is really for that. Like they don't know that, but that's why they're there. And so that's why there was a linguist with the team that did it, like, even though the linguist didn't come, was because they were trying to figure out what like what the message was behind this. And like uh the psychologist sends one of the party members, but like the two of them go looking by themselves, and the the there's like a there's a creature in there that's doing the writing, it kills the party member and it infects the uh psychologist with the same kind of fungal infection, whatever. Then they eventually they go and find out what it is, and it's some sort of gigantic mutating like lighthouse keeper. Yeah, it's the lighthouse keeper who was at ground zero for whatever happened.
JenOkay.
TomUm, and like whether he's in control of himself, it's it's it's unknown whether he's just been mutated into this thing or not, but it's also like she can't even see what it really is at first. Like a uh most of the time it's like shifting and changing form, but it's constantly writing these weird words.
JoeBright light, a lot of bright light, and she can't see properly, and she gets past it, and then she goes further down the tower, and then she sees like almost like a doorway with light, and she's gonna go towards it, but then she decides not to, and she's like, No, I'm not gonna she can't remember.
TomShe physically can't.
JoeLike, yeah, um, there's some sort of whether it's she talks about like uh that's like the grooves in the ceiling she's talking about.
TomI don't know how that's blocking her, but yeah, it's like it's causing her pain, and she doesn't know whether it's like one of the hypnotic suggestions or whether it's the infection side of her, but like she knows that she can't go down and figure out what that is, so she leaves.
JoeShe gets wounded a bunch of times, she gets shot, so the surveyor shoots her. Um, it's just her and the surveyor left, right? Because the anthropologist is dead, the the doctor, yeah. The psychologist just disappears without saying anything. The surveyor is kind of, I guess, like the Gina Rodriguez character. She's like, she wants to kind of go back, and she's kind of like the more tough person. She's the one, she has military training. She's the only one with like an automatic rifle. Everyone else has handguns. Um, so the biologist Lena says, I'm just I'm gonna go to the tower, the lighthouse, because we know that there's like weapons cache there from previous expeditions, and that's where Dr. Ventures, uh, the psychologist is going. And I want to go find the psychologist because she fucking got that person killed, and I want to, I don't know. So she goes to the lighthouse, she finds all the she finds all kinds of dead bodies there from previous expeditions, she finds weapon cache there from previous expeditions, and she finds all the journals or a lot of journals. Some of them are have decomposed. That's how long they've been there.
TomYeah.
JoeSo she reads the that's when she realizes that there's been more than 11 expeditions. She starts reading a bunch of the journals, she finds her husband's journal. Um, she decides to go back, but she does the whole encounter with the weird, like uh monster in the reeds, the moaning monster.
TomAnd which was a person at one point.
JoeOh, I'm sorry, I forgot one important thing as to really why the surveyor tries to shoot her. So um she uh the biologist tries to use one of the psychologist suggestions on the surveyor, uh, and it doesn't work. And the surveyor realizes what she did and is fucking furious. So when eventually the biologist does come back, the surveyor shoots her a couple times. But uh but apparently she's like the mutation that she's experiencing is giving her more like it's it's healing her faster. I don't even know. It's really weird.
JenYeah, okay.
JoeAnd then she talks about like towards the end how she has she's try she's purposely like harming herself or injuring herself to make her remain human. It's it's really weird shit going on.
TomIt's yeah, it's like she thinks that the that that the mutation or the infection or whatever uh is stopping the like fight like healing her is causing all it's taking all of its energy so it's not changing her. So she like the only way to stop whatever's happening to her to fully happen is like continue to give herself severe damage.
JoeYeah, but anyway, the encounter with the crawler is kind of like the uh the the climax of the book. Uh and then she decides that she's yeah, she she decides I'm gonna go back up the tower. And she goes back up the tower and goes back to base camp and decides I'm gonna go look for my husband, I guess. Yeah. Yeah.
TomYeah, it's yeah, the climax of the thing is like the the whole mystery is what's happening in the tower, the underground. The climax is that you find out that whatever's doing that was like the lighthouse keeper who was like ground zero for whatever occurred, but why he's doing it, what he's trying to do, what exactly happened, why is there a tower underground. None of that's explained. Um because it's all from her point of view. She doesn't know. The guy doesn't talk, he just looks at her. Okay.
JoeThere's also um some other things too in the book that they didn't put in the movie was that some of the like the creatures that they encounter have human eyes, and she starts to think and realize that that these are probably some of the expedition members that have mutated.
TomYeah.
JoeBecause she sees a dolphin at one point that has human eyes, and she it reminds her of her husband. Yeah. So there's a there's a imp it maybe it could be that this dolphin is her husband. Like mutated it. Yeah.
JenI'm reading the sequel then.
JoeWell, you gotta read the book, the original book.
JenNo, I just want to know if the dolphin is her husband.
TomYou should go find it on Wikipedia.
JoeJust go look it up. Is the dolphin her husband?
JenI don't tell me his his brother or something.
JoeI really want to go into like a reddit hole on this book because there's probably I can imagine all kinds of theories and stuff, but I guess I would have to read the other two books because it I'd probably get spoiled if I did.
JenYeah.
JoeUm but yeah, this is like one of those books I think you could really dig into from a discussion perspective because it's just so esoteric um but interesting. Um yeah. And thus ends the uh the movie Annihilation. Yes, it doesn't. So that ended like 20 minutes ago. Yeah. Yeah, the movie did end like 20 minutes ago. Were there any other points that we missed in this movie that uh that anyone feels like we need to discuss?
JenNo, I hit all my notes.
JoeI'm good. Yeah, I think I hit all my notes without even really trying. Let me see what we got here in terms of really so so when Annihilation hit theaters, the box office numbers reflected its troubled rollout. Operating on a budget between 40 and 55 million dollars, it grossed roughly 43 million worldwide, theatrically, severely hampered by international uh the international Netflix dump. So I forgot we I forgot to mention that, right? So they the studio decided that they were gonna dump this into Netflix internationally and then just release it, I think uh uh what's it called? Nationally. Domestically, thank you. Thank you. Uh domestically, because they were concerned that they weren't gonna be able to make any money off of this because I guess they weren't happy with it, because they watched the movie and were like, eh, this movie isn't that good.
TomUm, watch it.
JoeYeah, but apparently uh it soared critically. The film pulled an 88% over approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, lauded for Jen, it's haunting score, which is some guitar music, and then what's the song they play in here a couple of times? Um there's that one song. Yeah, it's a real song on here. It's like uh it's not an oldie, but it's probably from the 70s. I don't remember. Tom?
TomDo you remember okay now? I don't remember.
JoeUh if there's a film score for it or a soundtrack, there's only one song on it, probably.
JenWait. You sure it wasn't this?
JoeIt's is it the song When the Husband Comes Home?
JenSure it wasn't this? I don't remember ever hearing a song.
JoeYeah, there's a song that plays. It it only plays with her and the husband flashbacks, I think.
TomHelplessly hoping by Crosby Stills and Nash.
JoeThank you.
TomOkay.
JoeHelplessly hoping, Chen. Look it up. It's in the movie a few times. They play it like two or three times in the movie.
JenHoping.
JoeYeah. Uh let's see. The fandom was sharply divided, book readers were split down the middle. Really? I thought I'd pretty I'd think the book readers were all basically on one side, to be honest for this. Uh some mourn the missing lore while others appreciate it as a brilliant companion piece. Sure. General audiences found it deeply polarizing, some praised it, uh hypnotic dread, while mainstream while mainstream viewers expressed absolute frustration with its abstract, mind-bending ending. Which is how I felt when I first saw this. And again, I think I like the ending more now than I like the rest of the movie. Um, at release it was overshadowed by Studio Panic, but five years later, its reputation is skyrocketed. No, it's regarded as a modern cult classic and one of the finest sci-fi films of the 2010s.
JenNo, it isn't.
JoeAlongside films like Arrival proved that that's on our list. That's supposed to be a really good movie.
TomUh that movie is unbelievably good.
JoeI've never seen it, but uh it's on our list. Alongside films like Arrival, it proved that high concept intellectually demanding adult science fiction could still command a major studio footprint, even if the executives got scared of their own reflection.
TomOoh, this sounds a little biased. Yeah, I think it's a good idea. Alex Garvin write this.
JoeI think he did write this. Um but you probably want to know how uh the author Jeff Vandermeer felt about this.
TomSure.
JoeJeff Vandermeer expressed a mixed ambivalent appreciation. He praised the film's stunning visual language, calling it surreal and beautiful. I won't I wouldn't argue with that, um, and noted its functions effectively as an alternate alternate expedition into Area X while privately acknowledging it left behind core environmental and structural elements he held dear. I like that idea. This is like another just another expedition.
JenTurning of the wheel.
JoeYes. It's another one of the other expeditions into even though. He's just being kind. Yeah, he is being kind. Sounds like he's like, they paid me a lot of money, I guess. So I have to say nice things about that.
JenYes, it's fine.
JoeSo did did you know that the character names Ventress, Raddock, and Thorinson, we we were questioning these names. They were lifted directly from JG Ballard's 1966 novel, The Crystal World.
TomNo, yeah, I was not aware of that.
JoeYeah, apparently that's where they got the names from. So they they they didn't just give him these names for no reason. I mentioned how Garland refused to read the second and third books because he didn't want to alter his script or his thoughts on his script. I guess once he pounded that script out, he was like, This is beautiful. I can't let anything affect it.
JenNo notes.
JoeIt's a masterpiece. Um the the bear scream, the the that terrifying mutant bear voice. Uh that was created using processed human vocals mixed with animal sounds.
TomOkay. Okay.
JoeIn case you wanted to know that.
JenSure.
JoeYeah. Um, and I think uh that's about it. That's all I have, really.
JenOkay.
JoeSo do we want to give our ratings for this one?
JenYes. Sorry, I'm leaving it in the chat.
JoeWhat's this?
JenProcessed human vocals. I can't read it. Processed human vocals is the name of my rock band. My blinded fool. Um, yeah, I'll go f I'll I'll give it my rating first. I think I decided um that at a certain number, which I'll tell you in a second, is a movie that I would watch again. So I'm I'm from here up is a movie that I'd be like, all right, like if it was on, I would leave it on, or or I might I might put it on and watch a little bit of it. And I think that number is three and up. And I I I had this idea and then I referenced my my old uh ratings to make sure that it it is correct and it is. So I will be giving Annihilation a 2.75.
JoeJust be loves. So Jen, is it safe to say you will not be watching this again?
JenI can't ever see myself being like, let's watch Annihilation. But it wasn't awful. It was okay. You know, it was just like it was fine. And uh I'll never would ever be interested in watching it again.
JoeFair enough, John.
TomTom? Um yeah, I thought it was a perfectly okay movie. I don't I think Yeah, it was perfectly carbulent.
JoeI think it's every time every time.
TomYeah, I mean uh it's the ending. I I I understand. I think, you know, uh emotionally or spiritually, or whatever you want to call it, Joe. I understand your point of view about like you're liking the ending more the second time you watch it. I think having a sense of where it's going to go, you you don't you're not worried as much about like resolving itself. Uh I still think the ending is weak, and I don't think it makes any sense, and I think that does hurt the film. It doesn't make any sense in like the it's a mystery way. It just doesn't logically make sense what happens to the rest of the film. Um so that dings it. I'm gonna give it a two and a half.
JenThat could ruin a movie.
TomIt could.
JenYeah, and did.
JoeThe book doesn't logically make uh the ending of the book doesn't make any logical sense either.
TomBut that's true.
JoeYeah.
TomNothing in the book is very logically makes sense. I guess they're yeah, exactly. I guess they're a different way.
JoeYeah, like I guess knowing about that ending going into it, I was I was a little bit I was able to appreciate it a little bit more. It was more like, oh, this wasn't really as bad as I remember it being, and it was kind of entertaining a bit. Um it's yeah, you're right. It doesn't make any sense. I agree. It doesn't make any sense. What's stupid about the ending, the part I don't like about the ending is that she blows up Area X with a grenade and her husband's all better. A physical phosphorus grenade, a phosphorus grenade, and her husband's okay now. That's what I don't like about it.
TomAnd Abe Lincoln's back. Sorry.
JoeYeah, we don't want that guy. I'm gonna give this movie uh a 2.5 as well. Okay. Um, yeah, I'll I'll put it there. It's it's on par with my last with the last movie we did for me at least. Um, although I feel like I d I'm not watching, I'm not definitely not re-watching this movie. I've already watched it twice, and that's that's that's one too many times. Um 2001, I will you picked it. I know, but I won because I didn't remember a lot of the movie, but the fact that it was a book, I was like, oh well, I have to read this book because it's probably better than the movie. I was I really picked this because I wanted to read the book. That's why I picked this.
TomWell, I appreciate it because I really I did really enjoy the the the book.
JoeI did too. I I enjoyed it. Jen, I would recommend going back potentially and reading this one. It was it was enjoyable, it was different. Um get through.
TomUm you have plenty of spare time to read.
JenYeah, I do.
JoeYeah. That's that's right. Um I was gonna say something else, but I can't remember. It doesn't matter. Uh I already told you this is not a successful adaptation, I don't think, in any uh context of the wor phrase or word or meeting that we've discussed or debated. I agree.
JenI will uh defer to you guys on that one.
JoeYeah.
JenDoesn't sound like it was, though.
JoeNo. Oh, I think what I was getting at before was I will probably re-watch 2001 of Space Odyssey at some point in my life. Uh um, just to see if it rings a little different to me after having already seen it. Um alright, shall we wrap it up here then?
JenYeah.

Jen, would you like to take us out?
JenIt's not like us. It's unlike us. I don't know what it wants or if it wants, but it will grow until it encompasses everything. Our bodies and our minds will be fragmented into their smallest parts until not one part remains. Annihilation. She said it.
JoeI was waiting for you to play the music. Thanks everyone for listening. And you'll hear us next time.
